It might seem a little odd to find an iPhone game based on the work and recordings of most artists, but for someone with a career as strange and serendipitous as Daniel Johnston, it makes perfect sense.

Johnston has maintained a certain level of indie cred for decades, and has occasionally flirted with mainstream popularity when big time celebrities like the late Kurt Cobain were photographed wearing clothing that sported his artwork (underneath an open button-down shirt, of course). His most recognized image is a drawing of a frog called Jeremiah, often found under the sweetly cryptic message ‘Hi, How Are You.’

The new App, appropriately named Hi, How Are You, is a battle royale between Jeremiah and Satan over more than 25 strangely captivating levels. One look is all it takes to see that HHAY is overflowing with Johnston’s influence and unlike any other platformer at the App Store. You control Jeremiah, or one of three other unlockable characters, via the accelerometer or by a virtual joystick on your screen.

Hi, How Are You is way more polished than I anticipated it would be, offering extras like a bunch of achievements to keep you busy. Whether you think Johnston is a genius, a charlatan, or just a super-lucky son of a bitch, you can’t say that this game is just more of the status quo.
