The latest victim of Konami’s recent string of temporary but substantial App Store price slashings is Silent Hill: The Escape, which fell from its ghastly $8 price point to a much more reasonable 99 cents until Saturday.
This edition of the Silent Hill franchise is a creepy, tap-to-fire first person shooter that requires you to blow away faceless nurse-monsters (who admittedly have been blessed with some killer bods) and navigate the labyrinthine halls of each level to escape to safety.
Though the accelerometer-based control scheme is a good start, it’s still often awkward to make calculated movements and always extremely clumsy to get a 360 degree perspective. As usual, you can expect some no-nonsense, pants-peeing sound effects – especially if your earbuds are tucked in snugly.
The dim-flashlight lighting technique, which I assume is intended to create an even more suspenseful ambience, seems to serve better as a frustration tool. You can never quite see what you want to see, and that can erode your patience after some time. Flashlight batteries scattered about each level do offer some fleeting relief by powering-up your vision, but it’s not exactly total satisfaction.
Accounting for all its flaws, The Escape is inarguably one of the most polished titles you can find for your iPhone for 99 cents. That said, you’d have your work cut out for you to convince me that it’s worth $7.99. So get it before Saturday’s over, or just don’t get it.
