I’d be willing to bet that if you’re reading this blog, you already know what PapiJump is. But for those of you who don’t, it’s perhaps the finest iPhone game that money can’t buy. For the low, low price of a mouse click, you get hours of gloriously mindless gameplay that has you bounce a smiley face called Mr. Papi from platform to platform, climbing forever upward. There are big similarities between PapiJump and Karuki, but there’s also one enormous difference. PJ asks you to control the protagonist in relation to the platforms, while Karuki insists you control the platforms in relation to the bouncing hero.

A swipe of your finger draws a line on your screen that serves as a disposable trampoline for Karuki, its angle and altitude deciding where he goes. Each of Karuki’s six levels can be conquered by collecting enough followers and dropping them off at the goal at the top of the level, but be sure to avoid skulls, wizards, and water – they’ll harm Karuki.

Karuki is a fresh perspective on the ‘platform bouncer’ genre that is emerging for the iPhone. Mastering its simple controls and one-of-a-kind gameplay doesn’t happen right away, but after a few minutes you’ll be drawing lines like an architect. Karuki is a bargain for a buck.

Score: 4 stars out 5

Get Karuki.
