Rolando was one of the first notable titles to be released for the iPhone. Its satisfying cocktail of platform and puzzle elements, as well as intensely adorable graphics and an infectiously funky soundtrack showed the world that this device didn’t allow you to just play ‘cell phone games,’ but rather was a legitimate piece of gaming hardware.
And now, we have Rolando 2: Quest for the Golden Orchid. I’m sure you’re curious if ngmoco had enough sense not to make too many changes and screw up a good thing, so let’s get it all out in the open right away: Rolando 2 is better than the original. The control scheme which worked so flawlessly in its predecessor is back in full effect, and as a matter of fact, so is everything else. No major changes, just the sweet implementation of a few new elements – most notably an entirely fresh look.
The first Rolando has a two-dimensional, albeit endearing appearance, but these Rolandos get to explore an environment that’s rich with 3-D graphics. Don’t worry – it’s still cute as hell, just updated. Check out a video here. Once you see it in action, you might be more comfortable with its fat price tag. Also added to the mix is the ability for Rolandos to operate vehicles, and the introduction of water. In fact, the whole game takes place on a series of islands. Fat Rolandos sink, and little Rolandos float.
To master all of this game’s 45 compelling levels, you have to coordinate all the Rolandos at your disposal and use every tool of the environment. Often it’s not easy, but it’s always a blast. Rolando 2 is worth every penny.
