Scruzzleword takes a leisurely activity like a crossword puzzle and transforms it into a balls-to-the-wall race against the clock. It’s based on the time-tested, familiar crossword formula, but it tweaks a few aspects. From the outset, all the letters show right up on the grid, but only a few of them are in the right spot; they’re the yellow ones. From there, your job is to swap the locations of the rest of the letters to complete the puzzle. Tapping a correctly-placed letter will reveal the clue for both the across and down entry in which that letter lies.
At first, my one criticism with Scruzzleword was that the puzzles are too easy. I was able to buzz through the first few at an alarming pace, and I was afraid that I’d eat up the game’s 50 puzzles in no time at all. Then, I switched from beginner mode to challenge mode, which will only reveal clues for yellow squares that aren’t adjacent to any other yellow square. It adds just enough difficulty to keep things interesting, but games are still very playable.
Scruzzleword has a cool, modern look, very friendly interface, and stimulating gameplay. If you like crossword puzzles, you can’t go wrong with this title.
