So I did Tuesday’s New York Times Crossword Puzzle, but I never bought the paper. I had no problem spending a buck on a copy of the paper when I knew that I’d have time to frustrate myself into a frenzy with the puzzle, even though I knew the rest of the paper would probably end up unread and strewn all over the house. I was even OK with it when they upped it a quarter – but now it’s a staggering $2 a shot, and I can justify it no longer.

Enter The New York Times Crosswords Daily 2009, which by all indications is in no way affiliated with the The Gray Lady, save the re-packaging of its content. In addition to downloading and displaying the genuine NYT daily crossword every day, it also gives you access to ton of puzzles from the past.

The interface isn’t the best (there is still no electronic crossword that can compete with a paper one), but it’s totally bearable. What makes this app a winner is that it’s convenient, and it’s cost-effective. Convenient because if you’ve got your iPhone (and you always do), you’ve got the current NYT puzzle, and cost-effective because you get every day’s puzzle for the rest of the year for just $6. That’d cover three whole days of buying the newspapers. And yeah, I know it’s also bursting with the finest reporting in the world, but they shouldn’t give it away for free in such a sexy package if they want you to pay for it.

Like I said, it’s not perfect – but I think this is where I’ll be doing my non-Onion crossword puzzles from now on.
