Just when you thought they had exhausted all the ways to move around in a video game, something like Magnetic Joe comes along. And just when you thought you’d never see another game like Magnetic Joe again, something like Magnetic Joe 2 comes along.

There’s no D-pad, and you don’t tilt your iPhone to direct the protagonist. In fact, you don’t really have any power over the movement of Joe at all – at least not in the traditional sense. By tapping anywhere on the screen, you only decide whether or not his magnetism is turned on. When you’re broadcasting, you’re drawn to any of the blue attractors that you get close enough to, and you’re thrust in the direction of the arrow on its face. Some times to get the job done you need to pull yourself in two directions at once and ride it like a wave. It’s a hard nut to crack, but once you get a feel for the current you can zip around obstacles with shocking agility.

For just a buck until June 22 (when the price doubles), you get three play modes and 100 levels – plus an extremely helpful tutorial to help give you the basics. You haven’t played a game quite like Magnetic Joe 2 before, unless you happened to try the first Magnetic Joe. That’s very similar to Magnetic Joe 2. But unless you've played Magnetic Joe 1, you haven’t played a game quite like Magnetic Joe 2 before.

Get Magnetic Joe 2.
