Saucelifter takes the tried-and-true formula for arcade space shooters and turns it on its head. Instead of defending Earth from violent extraterrestrials, the roles are reversed. The ignorant and bellicose Earthlings have overreacted to a peaceful fact-finding mission and responded by capturing your brethren. Now, you must return to Earth and retrieve your fellow aliens from the strong grip of the human military.
It won’t be an easy mission. Armed with just one gun that can fire lasers in three directions, you must take on a whole arsenal from the ground and the air. The Earthlings are equipped with guns, lasers, turrets, missiles, drones, tanks, jets, and more. Your best defense is a zippy, spry flying saucer that you control via your iPhone’s accelerometer. Fire by tapping the space to the left, right, or below your aircraft.
Avoiding enemy fire and blowing them up when you can, you have to shoot your countrymen out of captivity and welcome them aboard your saucer. You can transport up to eight at a time back to the start of the level, where you can beam them back home. You earn points for each one you save, but be careful – the Earth military’s weapons and ferocity grow stronger the longer you play.
Evidently, Saucelifter is cut from the same cloth as a game released a year before I was born called Choplifter. It definitely has a throwback feel, but the gameplay isn’t stale by any means. It feels just right for this platform, in fact. Saucelifter’s sharp graphics and retro sound effects round out this addictive title from Madgarden.
