I wasn’t expecting a lot when I first tapped the Ragdoll Blaster icon, but just a few minutes and blasted ragdolls later, I knew it was my new favorite game.
Two bucks buys you 73 enthralling and thought-provoking levels that will have you pumping your fist during the fleeting moments of success and grinding your teeth in frustration the rest of the time. But in the words of The Tremeloes in their 1967 classic, even the bad times are good.
As the title suggests, the goal of each level is to fire a limp stick figure out of a cannon and connect with the red target. The first few levels are a breeze, but they get harder the further you go. They eventually become little puzzles that require some serious thoughtful consideration. Sometimes you have to place a punctual shot on a spinning catapult and sometimes you have to grind a ragdoll through a series of gears, but there’s a cool, physics-based trick to every level.
I conquered every level in a matter of a few hours, but I can’t wait to go back and do it again. The number of shots taken to beat each level is displayed in the corner, so you can compete against yourself the second and third times around.
Ragdoll Blaster is a daggone blast. Let’s hope Backflip Studios is already working on some new levels, or at least another game – they clearly know what they’re doing.
Pros: hyper-addictive physics-based puzzles; simple yet effective controls
Con: only 73 levels!
