Doodle Jump is a perfect representation of my favorite kind of iPhone game – the kind that begs you to play it over and over again. And not because there’s some elaborate storyline that keeps you on the edge of your seat, but because you want to beat your own high score for a game that requires just a couple of simple, repetitive actions (see Uggles).
It feels and looks suspiciously like PapiJump, but who cares? Doodle Jump adds a bunch of new ingredients to a familiar recipe. There are few things in life more satisfying than hitting one of the platforms outfitted with a springboard, which sends you skyward with what feels like jet propulsion. There are beasts that will destroy you if you don’t shoot them first (tapping anywhere on the screen will fire a round straight up). And there are phantom platforms that crumble as soon as you come in contact with them.
My only suggestion, besides allowing you to play your own tunes which they promise will be in the next update, is to somehow give a little more warning about the positioning of enemies when you’re a few platforms below them. If you hit a spring-loaded platform, you sometimes kill yourself before the monster even appears on the screen.
For a buck, you can’t go wrong with Doodle Jump. There’s no question that you’ll get your money’s worth.
Get Doodle Jump.
