I’ve always thought that at least half of Wolfenstein 3D’s draw was that the enemy was so despicable, so hated, that it provided an enormous sense of satisfaction to fill them with bullets. But enough about German Shepherds…

Of course I’m talking about Nazis, and you’ll have plenty of chances to get your kicks shootin’ ‘em up as you navigate the labyrinthine halls of Castle Wolfenstein. I won’t waste much time describing this game; you’ve played it a million times. This is a replica of the classic shooter from 1992. That means you’ll be opening the same sliding metal doors, gobbling up the same hearty meals for nutrition and pulling the same levers to complete levels.

The controls, however, are new. Sort of. A D-pad controls your movements, and you can set the accelerometer to turn or move laterally, as well as the sensitivity for each. You won’t be winning any agility contests at first, but eventually you’ll get the hang of it and be zooming around the castle like you were almost twenty years ago.

Another new feature is an easy-to-read map you can call up at any time. You’ll still go through an occasional cursing spell when you realize you’ve checked the same room a dozen times, but they’ll be much fewer and farther between.

Wolf 3-D for the iPhone brings over everything that made the original great, and the addition of the map makes it even greater. It’s an A+, no doubt about it.

Let’s just hope they nail Doom and Quake, too.
