The accelerometer is put to good use in Cube Runner, a one-trick pony that can keep your attention for a few minutes. You tilt your iPhone to navigate across a plane plagued with cubes, avoiding collision as long as possible.
The graphics aren’t breathtaking, but they don’t need to be. The 3-D cubes look like 3-D cubes, and they’re pretty much the only players on the stage. Even on the easiest setting Cube Runner is difficult at first, but after a few tries you start to get the hang of it. As a matter of fact, I found the hard setting to be the easiest. I know, sounds crazy – but as the speed increases, so does the game's reaction to your movements.
A piece of advice: if you’re going to use your headphones to check out what Cube Runner has to offer, turn the music and sound effects way down. The over-driven sound of me crashing not only made my ears ring for several minutes, it startled my friend who was across the room watching TV. I’m not exaggerating.
Cube Runner’s immediate accessibility and exciting first person perspective make it worth your time. Plus it’s pretty cool when you explode after colliding with a cube.
